2011 Day Camp Themes and Units - Dane County

THEMES FOR ALL PROGRAMS

A FINE MESS   BIG SUMMER FUN   CAMP FINALE!   COUNTY FAIR
  GOING GREEN   MAKE A SPLASH

Our most popular weekly themes are repeated, and include fun favorites along with new challenges.

A FINE MESS - Why do fun and messes usually go together?  Spend the week doing the messiest activities possible, from muckin’ in the mud to creating a cacophony of crazy kitchen concoctions! Sample some messy games like egg toss, egg drop, funky facials, messy muscle man and many more.  Paint your way through the day because it’s okay to splatter, smear and spray!  Experience 101 gooey, slippery, slimy, weird, awesome, magical, bizarre, incredible, oozing, bubbling, dripping, bouncing, fun experiments and discover the answers to your tough science questions!  Blaze a trail, bring your pail, wear an old shirt and learn in the dirt! We will, of course, play responsibly by cleaning up after ourselves.  Campers should bring older clothes, an extra change of clothing and a slop smock each day of camp.

BIG SUMMER FUN - Get ready for SUPERSIZED fun because AFTER SCHOOL Day Camp just got bigger and better!  We have acquired an amazing new piece of technology called the Incredible Enlarging Machine.  We can use it to JUMBO SIZE all of your favorite summer camp activities.  This week has huge potential including, life-sized board games, extra-large lawn games, giant puppet creation, full-sized fort building, large-scale artwork, supersized sports, colossal cooking projects and more! Our youngest campers will enjoy exploring what they want to do and be when they get BIGGER!  Older kids can challenge themselves by setting and breaking one of our camp records!  This week at AFTER SCHOOL Day Camp is your ticket to a large group of friends, huge life lessons and big fun!

CAMP FINALE! - Join your friends at camp for a colossal culmination of summer fun and festivities.  The week will be packed with fun field trips and your favorite camp activities.  Join all of the AFTER SCHOOL Day Camps on Wednesday at Olin Park for our annual end of summer party!  The day will include field games, camp songs, skits and face painting.  End this special day in the park pavilion for a dance party complete with a DJ, games, yummy snacks and prizes.  Even though summer is coming to an end we have saved the best for last. Don’t miss out on the fun!

COUNTY FAIR - Experience classic summer fun at the county fair!   Spend a day at the Dane County Fair visiting the animals, sampling the food, seeing the displays, listening to the music and trying the games.  You will have a “fair” amount of fun back at camp too!   Find out more about what and who is behind all of the 4-H projects and animal exhibits at the fair and how you can get involved yourself.  Create and construct models of carnival rides using a variety of materials such as K-nex, Legos, marble run and more!   Put your aim to the test in a variety of ways by creating and playing your own midway games!   Practice the skills of cooking and see what tempting creations you can concoct, including some county fair classics!   Try a variety of 4-H projects and topics including animals, art, science, leadership and more!

GOING GREEN - Set your course for the great outdoors! Find out how you can help solve the environmental puzzle through games, hands-on experiments, clean-up projects, hikes, role-plays, crafts and field trips. Discover and play with resources nature provides in ways you have never imagined.  Go on a safari adventure and get an up-close look at nature’s unique and beautiful creatures.  Practice basic outdoor skills. Explore the science of the earth.  Learn about planting and caring for a garden as well as cooking and eating locally grown foods. See how you can make art from the many things that are thrown away or by using items all around you in nature.  It’s not easy being green, but at camp it sure is fun!

MAKE A SPLASH - Water is all around us! Learn how we play in it, use it and take care of it.  Play it cool as you develop wet and wacky adaptations of all of your favorite games and sports.  Invent and play new games too!  Explore the substance that covers most of our planet by doing science experiments with H2O.  Get wet and wild as you explore the fascinating natural worlds of water and the aquatic habitats they support.  Discover the wildlife in the ponds, streams, and lakes right in your own “backyard.” Learn about different species of Wisconsin fish, how they live and how they taste. Come discover the world in, on and around the water.  Hot summer days and water – the perfect summer combination!  It’s sure to be a splash!
