Materials & Resources

  • Resources Article - Working with Kids and Adults
  • Lesson plans, milk counts, fire drills, learning the names of all those kids, learning to communicate with new co-workers—it’s a lot to take in and in a short period of time. If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed take a look at this article. It may help you to simplify things and focus on what is really most important.

  • Understanding Leads to a Better Team
  • Putting a good working team together is a challenge for AFTER SCHOOL site supervisors. The team make-up changes from day to day depending on staffing and most days you’re only together for a few hours. The general noise and commotion of a bunch of kids having fun and getting into mischief doesn’t make it any easier to find time to communicate with your staff either. This article will help you learn to gather the “pieces” of information, on the fly if need be, to begin to build a sense of teamwork with your co-workers.

Resources on the Internet
The following web sites may be useful to staff in planning activities to do with children after school or as sites you may want to encourage children to access for educational games and activities.

  • This site offers free downloads of theme-based resource pages including coloring sheets, mazes, worksheets, calendars and word searches.  It also offers cartoons, jokes and inspirational articles for teachers.

  • Younger children will enjoy this web site or teachers can download free materials from it for children to use.  Materials include games, worksheets, stickers and a chance to adopt or sponsor an endangered animal.

  • This government sponsored search engine can help older kids research topics of interest by subject—health and safety, language arts, physical education, science and social studies.  It can be a good homework aid or just fun to browse.
