Programs:
World Languages
The elementary years are the best time for children to learn another language. Research shows that learning a language enhances cognitive development and basic skills performance. Because a new language is not familiar children must acquire new language strategies. This program offers your child the opportunity to improve their academic skills including understanding of their own language. Language classes also introduce them to different cultures which helps them broaden their outlook and develop an understanding of others.
Program Highlights
- Weekly classes at your child's school
- Native and fluent instructors with teaching experience
- Small class sizes
- Students grouped by age and ability as enrollment allows
- Emphasis on real-life conversations
|
Program Goals
- Immerse children in the chosen language as much as possible
- Develop confidence in language learning
- Build vocabulary and comprehension skills
- Model and teach proper pronunciation
- Create a foundation and neuro-pathways for language learning

Language classes in Spanish, French, and Chinese are offered at a number of schools in the Dane County Region. Fall sessions go from October through December, and spring sessions from January through April. Classes do not meet on non-school days, in-service days, holidays or during winter and spring break. Classes missed due to instructor illness
or school closing will be made up during the weeks of December or May. Children enrolled in world language are expected to meet their instructor at the World Language program within five minutes after school is dismissed.
Interested in Teaching World Language?
World Language classes in Spanish, French and Chinese are offered. Instructors must enjoy working with children, have some teaching experience and be reasonably fluent in the target language as well as be able to communicate well in English. Teachers are given curriculum goals and immersion training, but are expected to design their own lesson plans. Most instruction will be done in the target language, using conversation practice, songs, games and cultural activities to create a fun and dynamic learning environment. Reliable transportation is needed. Classes meet for one hour after school once a week for 10-12 weeks each semester and are held at area elementary schools. Apply by sending a resume and cover letter to Shannon Welsh at swelsh@wisconsinyouthcompany.org or call 608-276-9782 ext. 23. |
See the chart below for locations, days, times and costs; the spring semester schedule and registration materials will be available starting December 7, 2011. There is a five dollar discount for children enrolled in AFTER SCHOOL programs. Enrollment is on a first come first served basis; space is limited; and classes are enrollment dependent. Please contact us with any questions on class availability.
