Positions & Descriptions

Camp Specialist

Day Camp Specialists
(40 hours per week)

8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. (with a ½ hour inpaid mid-day break) Monday through Friday, with additional paid time for planning, staff meetings and inservice training. At each site, it is the responsibility of the Specialist to plan and implement a recreational and educational program for school-age children in accordance with the Policies and Procedures established by AFTER SCHOOL and the State of Wisconsin day camp (or child care) licensing regulations, as well as A.C.A. standards, to assure the health and well-being of each child in the program.

Principal Job Responsibilties

Primary responsibilities of the position are to provide direct supervision to the children to assure their safety, and to plan and implement a quality program designed to meet the developmental needs of each child. As a direct link between AFTER SCHOOL and the parents/guardians of the children in the program, it is the responsibility of the Camp Specialist to promote customer satisfaction. They will comfortably meet the needs of children (5-12), including some with disabilities, in a friendly, warm, supportive, informal environment. They must be able to provide fun and interesting educational as well as recreational activities that are developmentally appropriate, i.e., arts and crafts, sports, games, cooking, music, gross motor activities, field trips, etc. They will involve children cooperatively and meaningfully in the planning process and be experienced in group techniques, program organization and planning for children. Other responsibilities include support for the overall maintenance of the program site and the fostering of positive relations between the program, school personnel and the community. Each Camp Specialist has a responsibility to maintain and develop his or her knowledge and skills through the completion of pre-camp training and other continuing education.

Probationary Period for Specialist positions:
2 weeks

Requirements of the position:

Candidates for the above positions must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent. Two years post-high school education with at least three credits in child-related course work is desired but not required (child development, childcare, elementary education, recreation for children). A college degree is not necessary for these positions. Candidates should have experience (either paid or volunteer) working with groups of children in the 5--12 age range, preferably in a recreational or informal educational setting.

Compensation and Benefits:

Starting wages for the Specialist position is determined by the candidate's education level and experience. All summer positions include the following benefits: Current school-year employees not enrolled in AFTER SCHOOL's health insurance program and summer only employees may claim up to $100 toward a personal health care expense that occurs during the summer employment period. Current school-year AFTER SCHOOL employees already enrolled in AFTER SCHOOL's health insurance program receive $100 toward their July and August premiums. As an additional benefit, summer employees within to enroll their own children in an applicable AFTER SCHOOL day camp program may do so according to the following rate: First child at no cost; second child - 50% of regular program fee; third and subsequent children - 100% of regular program fees. Staff must be working during the weeks the child is enrolled. Special programs such as Wander Wisconsin and Middle School U may be substituted for a maximum of one week at the cost difference. Subsequent weeks of special programs are full price.
