Camp Director

Summer Day Camp Director
(40 hours per week)
Day Camp Director positions are 12 weeks in duration; 10 weeks of camp and 2 weeks of pre/post camp responsibilities.   All Camp Directors must have access to a vehicle for supply shopping and equipment transfer. The Camp Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a day camp program site. It is the Camp Director's responsibility to operate the camp in accordance with the Policies and Procedures set forth by AFTER SCHOOL and the State of Wisconsin day camp (or day care) licensing regulations as well as American Camp Association standards. The Camp Director's responsibilities are divided into three major roles: Program, Personnel and Development.

Program
It is the responsibility of the Camp Director to implement a high quality school-age day camp program that is operated in a fiscally and legally responsible manner. The Camp Director provides direct on-site programs to the children enrolled; coordinates a daily schedule and oversees program planning and implementation including field trips and special events. It is the responsibility of the Camp Director to coordinate all transitions throughout the summer and to oversee the purchase and maintenance of site supplies, equipment and snacks.

  • Purchasing and fiscal record keeping
  • Fiscal management of line items
  • Timely and accurate completion of required paperwork
  • Program record maintenance
  • End of the summer camp closing
  • Overall level of safety, fun and learning

Personnel
It is the responsibility of the Camp Director to provide site-specific orientation and training for all staff and volunteers to assure that all site personnel are knowledgeable of and operate within the Policies and Procedures of AFTER SCHOOL,   state regulations governing day camps (or childcare centers), and A.C.A. standards. It is the responsibility of the Camp Director to coordinate staff schedules and oversee hours, supervise staff on site including any aides or volunteers, counsel and guide staff to develop skills and knowledge, keep staff informed and provide the support needed for staff to succeed. The Camp Director is the liaison between the program site and the administrative office.

  • Orienting and Training program staff

  • Providing staff with what they need to do the job.
  • Communication with immediate supervisor and other administrative staff (keeping them well informed)
  • Support for staff -- maintaining a positive environment and building a team.
  • Feedback for staff regarding their development through regular communication and including T.I.P. (Toward Improved Performance) Sheets, Mid-Summer Reviews and
  • End of Summer Evaluations.
  • Support other sites, Camp Directors, and staff
  • Maintain his/her own level of professional development
  • Staff record maintenance

Development
It is the responsibility of the Camp Director to plan, develop, implement and evaluate site programs within the goals of the AFTER SCHOOL organization through the Quality System. As management staff of AFTER SCHOOL, the Camp Director has the responsibility to assist efforts beneficial to the fiscal well-being of the organization through marketing and input into the evaluation process. It is the responsibility of the Camp Director to promote and improve the program viability through the development and maintenance of positive relationships with parents, school personnel, the community and AFTER SCHOOL staff.

  • Development of new and existing program elements

  • Setting goals in accountabilities through Individual Action Plan.

  • Parent communication (newsletters, letters, et.al.)
  • Public relations, marketing and visibility initiatives for both site and the organization
  • Other customer relations -- parent, child, staff, school, community
  • Program content quality.
  • Interest assessment and program/system integration
  • Resource development
  • Liaison with outside agencies and non AFTER SCHOOL staff (volunteers, research    projects, visitors, et.al.)
  • Support of regional and organization-wide activities

Probationary period for Camp Director positions:
6 weeks

Requirements of the position:
Candidates for this position must be at least 25 years of age. A Bachelor's degree in child studies, elementary education, recreation, physical education or other child-related field is preferred. Minimally, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of post-high school education and meet the state licensing requirements of a Camp Director or school-age lead teacher, as well as the A.C.A. requirements of a Camp Director. Supervisory experience is a must for this position.   First Aid and CPR certifications are required. (Training in First Aid and CPR prior to summer can be arranged.)   Must have access to a vehicle.

Compensation and Benefits:
Starting salary for the Camp Director position is determined by candidate's education level and experience.   All summer positions include the following benefits: Current school-year employees not enrolled in AFTER SCHOOL's health insurance program and summer only employees may claim up to $100 toward a personal health care expense that occurs during the summer employment period.   Current school-year AFTER SCHOOL employees already enrolled in AFTER SCHOOL's health insurance program receive $100 toward their July and August premiums.   As an additional benefit, summer employees within to enroll their own children in an applicable AFTER SCHOOL day camp program may do so according to the following rate: First child at no cost; second child - 50% of regular program fee; third and subsequent children - 100% of regular program fees.   Staff must be working during the weeks the child is enrolled.   Special programs such as Wander Wisconsin and Middle School U may be substituted for a maximum of one week at the cost difference.   Subsequent weeks of special programs are full price. Independence day is a paid holiday for Camp Directors.
