Positions & Descriptions

School year Specialist positions
(5 to 30 hours per week, depending on site)
Early morning and/or late weekday afternoons M-F, with additional paid time for planning, staff meetings and inservice training. At each site, it is the responsibility of the Specialist to plan and implement a recreational and educational program for school-age children in accordance with the policies and procedures established by AFTER SCHOOL and the State of Wisconsin child care licensing regulations to assure the health and well-being of each child in the program. There are three classifications of Specialist positions: Program Specialist, Club Specialist and Kindergarten Specialist.

Program Specialists
Primary responsibilities of the position are to provide direct supervision to the children to assure their safety, and to plan and implement a quality program designed to meet the developmental needs of each child. As a direct link between AFTER SCHOOL and the parents/guardians of the children in the program, it is the responsibility of the Program Specialist to promote customer satisfaction. They will comfortably meet the needs of children (5-12), including some with disabilities, in a friendly, warm, supportive, informal environment. They must be able to provide fun and interesting educational as well as recreational activities that are developmentally appropriate, i.e., arts and crafts, sports, games, cooking, music, gross motor activities, field trips, etc. They will involve children cooperatively and meaningfully in the planning process and be experienced in group techniques, program organization and planning for children. Other responsibilities include support for the overall maintenance of the program site and the fostering of positive relations between the program, school personnel and the community. Each Program Specialist has a responsibility to maintain and develop his or her knowledge and skills through the completion of continuing education.

Club Specialists
In addition to the description requirements for Program Specialists, the Club Specialist has the responsibility to facilitate the development of a club environment in which children are presented with opportunities for self-governance, the development of leadership skills and an introduction to life-skills and interests. Club Specialists will provide leadership to the 4-H program operated through AFTER SCHOOL, as well as other identified collaborations, and will be able to offer challenging and long-term projects appropriate to the 8-14 year old age group. They will involve children in the planning, implementation and evaluation of program goals and objectives.

Kindergarten Specialists
In addition to the responsibilities of a Program Specialist, the Kindergarten Specialist has the responsibility to develop a curriculum and program environment that meets the special developmental needs of the kindergarten child who attends a shortened school day program.

Probationary Period for Specialist positions:
8 weeks

Requirements of the position:
Candidates for the above positions must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent. Two years post-high school education with at least three credits in child-related course work is desired but not required (child development, childcare, elementary education, recreation for children). A college degree is not necessary for these positions. Candidates should have experience (either paid or volunteer) working with groups of children in the 5--12 age range, preferably in a recreational or informal educational setting.

Compensation and Benefits: Starting wages for the Specialist position is determined by the candidate’s education level and experience. Benefits for employees working a minimum of 20 hours per week include variable payment toward single premium coverage of offered health and dental plans depending on hours worked. Eligible employees not opting for health and dental benefits will receive a monthly cash payment equivalent to half of the applicable employer contribution.

As an additional benefit, employees wishing to enroll their own children in an applicable AFTER SCHOOL care program may do so according to the following rate; first child - no charge, second child -50% of regular program fee.

The Specialist position reports to the Site Supervisor assigned to the site where the Specialist is working.
